Orange Beach, Alabama was settled in the mid-1860s. With its vast forestlands and beautiful scenery, the settlement became a hot spot for tourists and visitors as the state of Alabama grew. The beaches caused most of this traffic as the fishing industry dominated the Orange Beach area. One of the earliest hotels in Orange Beach was built in 1920, around the same time boat renting and fishing expeditions began to take off in the south. The name stems from the oranges grown there, which later became a large export industry in 1916. With the groves gone, once again, sport fishing took center stage. After Hurricane Frederic hit in September 1979 and leveled many structures, Orange Beach’s population grew very quickly afterwards. Because the city grew so rapidly, there was a need for better infrastructure and more services for the community. This led to the incorporation of the City of Orange Beach in 1984.
Today, there is not a soul in Alabama who does not adore Orange Beach. The beautiful environment and lovely air make your stay that much more amazing. The city is expanding rapidly, with a modern population of over 8,000 people. The city hosts a large number of events, including the two-day art festival, “Arts Alley.” Orange Beach maintains a large aquatic center, a sportsplex, a recreation center and a waterfront park.
